Intense Pulsed Light
Treatment
Photofacial technology, which uses pulsed light to treat acne, remove pigmented lesions, vascular lesions (rosacea/spider veins) and blemished skin. Treatments are of short duration and cause little discomfort. Most people will experience some temporary redness and swelling, similar to a sunburn. This does not interfere with normal activities. Pigmented lesions will darken slightly after treatment, and then fade away after 10-14 days. Vascular lesions generally undergo immediate graying or blanching, and fade in 10-14 days. Intense plulsed light (IPL) procedures can be even more effective when the skin is pretreated with Levulan. This novel compound sensitizes the skin to the light treatments and yields more dramatic results. Fewer treatments are needed to achieve the desired effects. For example, one or two treatments with Levulan may give results equivalent to 5 treatments without this agent. The process is called Photodynamic Therapy and is truly one of the most exciting areas in dermatology today.
