Does Botox® Only Treat Wrinkles in the Upper Face?
Since Botox® first burst onto the cosmetic scene in 2002, it has become the true workhorse at dermatology and med spa practices around the world. From tackling frown and forehead lines to getting rid of crow’s feet, Botox can be a game-changer when it comes to the upper half of your face. But Botox certainly doesn’t stop there.
In 2023, there were nearly 9.5 million neuromodulation injection treatments in the United States, making Botox and its counterparts the top minimally invasive cosmetic procedure.
To give you an idea about what Botox can accomplish beyond the upper half of your face, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Juan-Carlos Caballero and the expert team at Warrenton Dermatology & Skin Therapy Center review a few of the surprising and innovative ways we can use Botox to enhance your appearance — and even improve your health!
Turn that frown around
If you have a mouth that turns down at the corners, it can make you look angrier, sadder, or less vibrant than you’d like. With Botox, we’re able to turn that frown upside down by injecting Botox into the depressor muscles that control the corners of your mouth.
With these muscles temporarily relaxed, the corners of your mouth can lift up without you having to smile. In other words, we can give your resting face a more open and friendly look.
Enhance your mouth with a lip flip
While dermal fillers and lip plumpers can do great things in giving your lips more volume, Botox can also play a role. With Botox, we can relax the muscles around your upper and lower lips to make them flip up or down, creating the effect of having a more voluminous lip.
Narrow your jaw
Clench your teeth for a moment and feel how the muscles on either side of your jaw — just below your ears — pop out. These muscles are called masseters, and when we inject them with Botox, they become less pronounced. If you want a slimmer face and a less jowly, “masculine” look, Botox can do the trick.
Smooth Out Your Neck
The vertical muscles that run from your jaw to your collarbone are called platysmal bands, and they can become more pronounced with age. They can also play a role in pulling down on the skin under the chin, making it look more lax or loose. Botox can relax these muscles, smoothing out the neck area and providing a temporary “neck lift” result.
Medical uses of Botox
To round out the many uses of Botox, we want to point out that this treatment is approved by the FDA for a number of health conditions, too, including:
- Crossed eyes
- Upper limb spasticity
- Migraine headaches
- Urinary incontinence
- Overactive bladder
- Neck pain due to cervical dystonia
As you can see, Botox is a handy tool for a wide range of medical professions. For our part, we love the versatility of Botox in tackling cosmetic goals over your entire face — and not just the upper half.
